Is Your Heat Just Like A Magician? 2 Ways To Keep It From Magically Disappearing From Your Home
When it is bitter cold outside you should be able to be comfortable in your home. If you are not and your heat seems to magically disappear, you need to lock it inside, which is not only more comfortable for you, but you will not be shocked when you open your electrical bill.
Removable Storm Windows Inside
If you feel cold air when you stand next to your windows, you can take care of this by installing removable storm windows inside. You can purchase these windows from window companies, who can install them for you. Once installed, you can remove them when spring arrives, and you want to open the windows to let the fresh air come in. You can then put the window inserts back in during the summer months to keep your cool air inside.
These inserts generally have an aluminum frame, with weather stripping around the frame to provide a snug fit. Many companies use a laser measuring process so they can design the inserts to fit any window, even if it is oddly shaped. For the edging, you can choose a color that goes well with your home's décor. From the outside, they are completely undetectable.
If you want to save money, you can make your own magnetic storm windows, which are held in place with a magnet.
Insulated Window Treatments
You can go a step further and use insulated window treatments over your window inserts. Some options you have include:
- Roller shades: These shades mount inside the window frame, making sure there are no gaps at the sides. They should be long enough to touch the windowsills when you pull them down. You can make them more energy efficient by purchasing shades that have a reflective coating on them.
- Draperies: Purchase drapers made with a fabric that has low air permeability, such as cotton or linen, with a tight weave. The draperies should be as close to the window as they can get, and they should fall onto the floor or the windowsill. Install a cornice at the top of the window, which is typically used to hide hardware. You can easily make a cornice yourself to save money. Use magnetic tape or Velcro to attach the draperies to the wall at the bottom and sides of the window.
- Reflective Window Films: Place mirror like silver reflective window films for your windows. These work much better than transparent films, as they draw in the sun's heat. Do not place the films on south facing windows, as you want the winter sun to shine into these window.
Besides using these two tips, make sure the weather stripping is secure around the windows, and that there are no gaps in the window frames. When you are finished, your cold and drafty house will be a nice warm haven for you and your family.
