2 Things You Can Do To Help Your Furnace Not Work As Hard

Posted on

When the winter comes many homeowners wonder what they can do to keep their houses warm without overspending on their utilities. If you are not careful, you can easily pump your furnace and pay for it, literally, when you gas bill comes along. Although you won't be able to completely turn off your furnace and keep your house warm, there are some things you can do to make sure your furnace is not overworking:

1. Better Insulate The House

Investing in some better insulation to the house will be a great way to keep your house temperature constant year round. If you live in an older house you might be surprised at just how poorly insulated the house really is. For example, the weather stripping around the house can become worn over time so that even though the doors are shut they are still letting air in and out. By simply adding more weather stripping to your doors, you can save a lot of money.

Windows are another way air is let out of the house. Older or single paned windows don't always hold the air in. You can tell if your windows need replacing by simply touching them. Place your hand on the window to check the temperature. If the window reflects the inside temperature, the window is fine, if it is cold, like the temperature outside, it is not doing it's job of insulating the house. Although this might seem like the windows are an expensive investment, over time it will save you money in the long run.

Last, try adding some rugs to the floors and pictures on the wall. The more plush furnishings you have in the house, the better it will hold in the air. By better insulating the house, it will help the HVAC system to not have to work as hard saving you money.

2. Keep The Sun Coming In

One mistake that many people make is failing to use the sun to their advantage. Just as the sun will heat the outdoors, it can also heat your house. During the hottest parts of the day the suns rays will increase the temperature in your home if you open the blinds and windows to let the sun shine in. After the sun goes down, close the drapes and blinds to hold the temperature constant.

By doing these things you can help your furnace not to work as hard while still keeping your house warm.
