How To Quiet Your Compressor

Posted on

Is your air conditioner loud? Does it seem like it is much louder than it used to be? Even people who install a brand-new air conditioner are often surprised by how loud the system is when it is running. Luckily, there are a few ways you can reduce the noise of your air conditioner unit. This article explains a simple fix for a noisy air conditioner.

The Compressor Can Be Loud

The majority of the noise coming from your air conditioner is probably caused by the compressor. You cannot see the compressor unless you look below the fan blades inside the main compartment of the air conditioner cabinet. It uses electricity to compress and circulate cold air into the condenser unit. In reality, you don't even really need to understand how the compressor works in order to make it quieter.

It is worth noting that air conditioning units can also become loud if something happens with the fan system. The large fan blades, which spins at tremendous speed, can become damaged, lopsided, or loose. This is usually marked by a rattling, and you should be able to tell distinguish a faulty fan from a loud compressor.

Compressor Blankets

Many manufacturers make compressor dampening blankets. These are basically neoprene or fiberglass fabric sheets that wrap around the compressor. These blankets are designed for your specific compressor, so that it will fit perfectly around it.

Accessing the Compressor

The hard part of the job is actually accessing compressor so that you can apply the blanket. The compressor is usually at the very bottom of the AC cabinet compartment, and you need to access it from the top of the cabinet. Removing the guard is simple you take out the mounting bolts with a power drill. But, once all of the bolts are removed, it might take two people to lift the compressor up and out of the unit. The guard is also attached to the heavy fan motor and blades.

So, you need to lift the entire thing up straight up and out of the unit, setting it on the ground so you can freely access the compressor. Of course, all of this should be done only after you turn the power off to your air conditioning unit.

If you have purchased the right blanket, it will wrap right around the compressor, and you can secure it without any tools. You should immediately notice that your compressor is quieter. For more information, contact your local HVAC services.
