Tips For Proper Air Conditioning Maintenance

Posted on

Proper maintenance of an air conditioning system is crucial in order to ensure that it is going to work well and last for as long as possible. You don't want to have to replace the central AC unit any earlier than you have to, so be sure to make use of the following tips:

Keep The Filter Clean

The air filter is going to get dirty after a while and you want to make sure that you are cleaning or replacing it before it gets to the point of being actually clogged. When the air filter is completely clogged, the air is not going to be able to flow through it. This can cause extra strain on your HVAC system and it can cause your AC unit to freeze up. The more often the unit freezes up, the more harm it experiences. To prevent the freezing of your central air conditioning system, you will want to check the condition of the filter every few weeks. If it is still clean, you can put it back in. If it is starting to look a little rough, go ahead and replace it. If it is a reusable HVAC system filter, you will need to clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions and then allow it to completely dry before inserting it back into the unit.

Keep Debris Off Of It

You want to make sure that you are removing any sticks or leaves that make their way onto the top of the central air conditioning system. You do not want debris getting into the system because it can impact its functioning, and cleaning them out of the unit will be more labor-intensive than simply removing them off of the top of the unit.

Cover It Up For The Winter

If there is going to be a few months where you are not going to be using the central air conditioning system, you will want to cover it up. There are covers made specifically for air conditioners that will cover the entire unit while allowing some ventilation through little vents around the sides of the cover. Make sure that you are measuring the size of your central air conditioning system so you are purchasing the correct cover for it. You want the cover to be a good fit so it will not simply blow off during a high wind storm.

If you need assistance, you can contact a local HVAC company to ask for central AC maintenance help.
